Connected with Reading Program

CwR

For the past four years District 57 has had community members visit our classrooms periodically to read aloud to students. We have started up the program in November 2008 again. We have about 40% of the classrooms covered, but wish to expand further, getting more community folks involved. We are asking interested folks to contact Bob Furst (847-385-3733 or bfurst@dist57.org). There are classrooms ready and waiting.

Reading is the foundation of all learning, and is a key component of our Language Arts Curriculum at every grade level. The Connected with Reading program gives our students an opportunity to hear another adult model what  "good reading"  sounds like. There is no experience that is more rewarding. Spending 15-20 minutes in a classroom with our students can gave one a different perspective on what is really important in life. The kids are most attentive and teachers most appreciative of folks willing to give of themselves and bring their outside influences and experiences to their class.

Some comments about the program from teachers:

  • "I love the Connected with Reading program!  [The reader] sometimes brings a little surprise for them as well, such as a  talking/dancing turkey or even a singing snowman!!!  My class always  enjoys her coming in and we really have formed a bond with her already!"
  • "My students were really excited about him coming when I announced it yesterday.  One thing I enjoy is they clap  after he finishes the book...they never do that for me!"
  • "Students get an opportunity to connect with a  community member, and hear another adult model what  'good reading'  sounds like."

Some comments about the program from readers:

  • "The students are attentive and evidently are enjoying the reading sessions.  They've asked some good questions after each one.  I'm definitely enjoying the opportunity to spend time in the classroom. "
  • At first I was a little nervous, but the second graders I read to make me feel like a Rock Star. They applaud when I finish the book. And when I come back the following week, they cheer when I arrive. What a great audience.
