Internet Safety Parent Seminars
In cooperation with the Mount Prospect Police Department, Officer Dirk Ollech talked to parents about Internet safety topics. He discussed the topics of malware, phishing, and spyware. However, of great concern are potential dangers lurking on social networking sites such as myspace.com, primarily the concern that pedophile predators will use these portals as a tool to find
victims.
Please read below about the presentations we have held at our schools.
Thank you to all who showed interest in the Parent Internet Safety Seminars. And thank you to Officer Dirk Ollech and
the Mount Prospect Police Department for their guidance on this
important topic.

i-Safe America, Inc. is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth to safely and responsibly take control of their Internet experience.
Using guidelines established by i-Safe America, District 57 is taking this opportunity to implement a comprehensive strategy that will provide our children, with the awareness and knowledge they need to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive, or unlawful behavior on the Internet, and respond appropriately.
Feedback from the seminars was very good.
Some quotes from our survey:
•"All parents should take part in this seminar."
•"I thought the seminar was presented well. In a clear manner that was
easily understandable to someone not familiar with the dangers of the
internet."
• "I learned a great deal about email scams, security measures,
the severe issue of bullying and my space.com."
•"I learned a little more about how predators use the internet,
what children can be exposed to when on-line, and about the My-Space site."
•"I learned that the concerns of the i-safe program are much closer to
home than I thought. I think the best line of the seminar was when
Officer Ollech pointed out his internet viewing habits with his own."
child. It showed the parent as the most important part of the process.
The i-Safe program has been endorsed by the Parent Teacher Associations of all our schools -- Lincoln, Lions Park, and Fairview.
