New Lincoln fitness center will be dedicated at 7 p.m. on Thursday November 1, prior to the evening School Board meeting. District 57 families are invited to see the space and hear about its state-of-the-art features. The fitness center was renovated over the summer through a grant from the Education Foundation.
The District 57 Education Foundation funded grants totaling more than $19,000 to several applications this month. Teachers applied for the grants in the areas of curriculum, technology and wellness. Approved grants include: collections of books for all four schools that will be used for the district-wide Traits of Quality Writing program, a baritone saxophone for the Lincoln music program, scanning and editing equipment for the Extended Support Program, a Lego League robot set for Lincoln, and a new stage curtain for the Westbrook gym/multi-purpose room. The Foundation also approved $500 in discretionary funds for each school.
"We were pleased that we could fund so many important items that will truly make a difference for District 57 students," says Tom Lowe, Foundation chairman. "We thank everyone who has supported the Foundation over the past year. They made it possible for us to respond so positively to the teachers' requests."
What is the District 57 Education Foundation?
A small but committed group of parents and community leaders started the District 57 Education Foundation in 1998. Their first fund-raising effort was selling candy at a carnival. Eight years and more than $400,000 later, the scope of the Education Foundation has grown, but the mission remains the same – to enhance the education of District 57 students by generating and allocating resources through partnerships with businesses, the local community, school administration, teachers, parents, students and alumni. The Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization governed by a trustee board of Mt. Prospect community members.
Goals
Curriculum Support
The Foundation allocates resources to support the established curriculum of District 57. This includes support for teachers’ efforts to enhance the learning experience in their classrooms.
Technology
The Foundation supports the District’s Technology Plan, providing students and staff with the appropriate technological tools and skills to prepare them for the advancements of tomorrow.
Wellness
The Foundation assists in providing an environment for building a healthy and safe student body. The wellness campaign encompasses the nutritional, physical and academic well-being of District 57 students, as well as addresses student safety inside and outside of schools.
Why the Foundation matters to our community
We all know that educating a child requires vast resources. The Foundation works to increase those resources so that our community’s children can take advantage of learning opportunities that might not otherwise be available to them. That’s why so many parents have enthusiastically embraced the mission of the District 57 Education Foundation.
But the goals of the Foundation are not only important to parents; they also should matter to anyone who cares about the future of our Mt. Prospect community. The quality of the community is reflected in the quality of our schools.
The Education Foundation enhances the education of District 57 students in ways that will serve them well for years to come!
