Dear Parents and Community Members,
Welcome to the start of the 2008-09 school year! As we move into the start of the academic year, exciting opportunities lie ahead for District 57. Our four schools continue to bring the very best in educational models and strategies to our classrooms. This year we continue our focus on student writing, as we work to bring the “Six Traits of Writing” to our young scribes. We are also examining our approaches to spelling instruction, and the utilization of new spelling materials at the elementary level. Our science committee will begin the exploration of new curriculum and materials for instruction in science this year. At Lincoln Middle School, we are bringing new math materials and formatting to our classes this fall, with the intent of presenting a more in-depth mathematics experience for our students.
These exciting instructional advances are coupled with
improved facilities for our learners. Lions Park School is the recipient of new
carpeting throughout the building; Westbrook School has a new parking lot that
will greatly increase our parking capacity there. Additionally, each building
has received considerable cleaning and painting efforts and our landscaping is
also being improved throughout the district. We believe that the District is in
great shape for 2008-09 and ready to welcome your child’s return to classes.
As you may know, this is my seventh and final year as
superintendent of District 57. The Board of Education will begin the search for
my successor in the near future. The intention will be to name the next
superintendent later in this school year. It has been my distinct pleasure to
serve as the Superintendent of Schools these past years, and I will do my very
best to make this school year an outstanding and memorable one for your child.
On behalf of the District Administration and the Board of Education, welcome
again to District 57 and the 2008-09 school year.
As always, thank you for your support of District 57. I look forward to seeing you soon at our
district and school events.
Sincerely,
Bruce R. Brown Ed.D.
